Mastering Comfort: The Complete Guide to Toric Colored Contacts

Comfortably Mastering Toric Colored Contacts! The Complete Guide to Avoiding Failure

Why do colored contacts for astigmatism feel painful or uncomfortable? Summary of Solutions

Toric colored contact lenses (lenses for astigmatism) tend to feel more prone to pain or foreign body sensations than standard lenses because they are not uniform in thickness and need to be fixed in a specific direction (axis). This is a structural feature where part of the lens is designed thicker to correct astigmatism. We have summarized the causes and specific solutions for the concerns our customers face.

1. When there is "sharp, piercing pain"

How toric lenses work

This is the most common symptom, occurring when the lens is inside out, tiny particles like dust are attached, or the edge of the lens is damaged. In such cases, remove the lens immediately, lightly rub and wash it with multi-purpose solution (MPS), and try wearing it again. Also, check if the lens is right-side out (forming a perfect "bowl" shape) and inspect for fine scratches or chips in a bright place. Since even microscopic scratches can damage the cornea, discard the lens immediately if it is damaged.

2. When there is a "gritty feeling or tight, constricting pressure"

This is a sign that the lens is sticking too tightly to the eye or that there is a lack of oxygen. It may be because the Base Curve (BC) of the lens is too steep for your eye, or the cornea is swelling due to long-term use. As a solution, use preservative-free artificial tears to provide moisture. If the discomfort persists, shorten your daily wearing time to 4–6 hours. If you have been wearing them for more than 8 hours, remove them immediately and switch to glasses. If specific brands always feel tight, the BC of those products may not fit your eyes, so consider switching to a different brand.

3. When "vision is blurred and there is throbbing pain"

This is deeply related to the "axis misalignment" unique to toric lenses. It occurs when the astigmatism axis does not match or when the lens continues to rotate on the pupil without being fixed. Since toric contact lenses are weighted at the bottom, they need a little time to stabilize. Blink gently a few times immediately after insertion and wait for 1–2 minutes. At this time, if blinking is too weak, the lens will not return to its fixed position, so it is effective to repeat the action of closing your eyes tightly and opening them about 5 times. If you experience dizziness, your current eye condition and prescription may not match, so we recommend a re-examination.

4. When "the lens sticks and hurts during removal"

Due to long-term wear, the moisture between the lens and the cornea may dry out, causing the lens to suction onto the cornea. Never force the lens off, as it may peel or scratch the corneal surface (epithelium). Always apply plenty of eye drops, wait for 3–5 minutes, and remove it safely after confirming that the lens moves by blinking. Making it a habit to apply one drop of eye drops right before removal effectively prevents pain.

5. Other common discomforts (shifting, light reflection, redness)

The "shifting phenomenon," where the lens moves significantly with every blink, occurs when the lens is inside out or the BC is too loose. Blurred light or eye fatigue at night is caused by design interference as the pupil dilates or poor axis stability due to fatigue. Be sure to blink properly to adjust the position or remove them early. If your eyes are red and stinging, it may be an allergy to the ingredients in the preservative solution, so try rinsing with saline before wearing, or warm your eyes at night to help alleviate dryness.

⚠️ Note: If redness or pain persists after removing the lens, if vision remains blurred, or if tearing does not stop, discontinue use immediately and consult an ophthalmologist. Toric lenses are precisely designed to be slightly thicker at the bottom for correction. Please ensure careful care until you get used to them.

👁️ The 100% Mastery Guide for Toric Colored Contacts

Why am I the only one experiencing pain with colored contacts for astigmatism?

"Stylish eyes are important, but comfort comes first!" Here are 4 tips from experts.

  1. 🕒 Don't wear new lenses immediately; create a "conditioning time"!

The liquid in the new lens packaging contains strong preservative ingredients that can irritate the eyes.

Tip: After opening, soak the lens in your usual multi-purpose solution (MPS) for about 4–6 hours.

Effect: The lens becomes much softer, and the stinging sensation when first inserted is dramatically reduced.

Q. Why does soaking make it more comfortable?

A. Mitigating irritation from the storage (blister) solution: The liquid in the container is designed with a high concentration to protect the lens for a long time. Sensitive eyes can react to these ingredients and feel pain.

Ensuring "Sufficient Hydration" of the material: Lenses immediately after shipment may have slight material shrinkage. By soaking them in a familiar cleaning solution, the material reacts fully with moisture, becoming soft and stable.

Adjusting pH levels and concentration: It reduces the "osmotic pressure shock" caused by the difference in pH between the storage solution and your tears. Soaking in your own care products creates an environment closer to your eyes, improving comfort.

"Conditioning Steps for New Lenses"

Recommended time: Minimum 2–4 hours. Ideally overnight (over 6 hours). Method: 1. Open the lens. 2. Discard the storage solution inside. 3. Rinse lightly with your usual cleaning solution. 4. Fill a clean case with fresh cleaning solution and soak the lens.

⚠️ Note - Saline solution is not for storage. Since it has no disinfecting or preserving function, always use "Multi-Purpose Solution (MPS)." - If you are in a hurry, you can reduce irritation just by placing the lens in your palm and rinsing both sides thoroughly with cleaning solution for 5–10 seconds.

💡 Summary: The liquid in the package can be strong, so it may sting at first. Try soaking it in your usual cleaning solution for about 4 hours before wearing. The lens will settle in more easily and comfort will improve!

2. 🧭 For astigmatism, "orientation" is life!

Toric lenses are designed to be slightly thicker at the bottom for correction.

Tip: After insertion, repeat the action of closing your eyes tightly and opening them 5 times.

Effect: The lens stabilizes in the correct position (the weighted side down due to gravity), resolving blurring and discomfort.

3. 🔍 You can find the cause by the "time of day" the pain occurs!

Does it hurt right after putting it on? There is a high probability the lens is inside out or tiny dust is attached. Remove and clean immediately. Does it hurt from the evening onward? This is a sign that the eyes are experiencing oxygen deficiency or dryness. Apply eye drops or remove them early.

4. 🧼 "Protein stains" are the enemy of toric lenses!

Because colored contacts for astigmatism have a complex surface structure, dirt tends to adhere more easily than on general lenses. If you use a type for more than a week, performing regular protein removal will help maintain new-lens-like comfort.

Tip: Applying eye drops before removal can prevent the lens from suctioning and protect the cornea from scratches.
